Chapter 10

Em pulled a chair from the table into the bathroom and pushed Daniel into it. She unwound the towel, rested his hand in the sink and poured on the ice chips. "When it gets too cold for you, take a break."

She used a clean corner of the stained towel to remove the blood from the pale blue carpet by the door. She wiped off the blood smear on the wall. It was undamaged, clearly having won the battle.

When she came back to the bathroom, Daniel grabbed her with his free hand and pulled her down on his lap. "What is Control going to say about my discovering who I am and going home?"

Shocked she had completely forgotten her boss; she sprang off his lap and backed away. "Oh, my god, I'll never be able to get to sleep now."

"He's that scary?"

"Yes, and what's worse, I hadn't even thought about him since he came to see me in Houston."

Daniel responded with a lazy grin. "I'd no idea I was so distracting."

She paced beside the tub. "Yes, you did. Now behave or I'll toss you in the tub and pour a bucket of ice right were you need it."

He straightened his shoulders and laughed. "I'll be good, or at least I'll try."

She sat down on the end of the tub, just out of reach. "How's your hand?"

"Other than cold, it doesn't feel too bad." He pulled his bruised and swollen hand from the sink and wiggled his fingers.

"It would have been smarted to kick the wall," Em posed.

"I'll do it next time."

"That's a comfort," she replied. "We should probably go over to the medical unit. You might have broken a bone, maybe several."

He plunged his hand back into to the ice. "It's not that bad."

Em wasn't so certain. "I'm sorry if I didn't understand how anxious you were for tomorrow to be over. We could have gone out and run around the base a few times. Exercise is good for releasing tension."

"So is sex."

Too annoyed with him to respond, she got up and went into the other room. She turned on the viewing screen and requested the Dreamer. Restful scenes in peaceful blues and greens floated across the screen. Slow swirls and dancing lines kept time with the lilting music, and she was sorry she hadn't thought of the Dreamer earlier. It was so easy to lose herself in the Dreamer's ethereal world, and she stretched out on the end of his bed to do so.

Daniel yanked his hand from the sink and stood in the doorway. "What is that?"

"The Dreamer. Some believe it's simply relaxing, other's claim it's addictive."

He crossed the room in two long strides and switched off the screen. "Sorry, that's too much like my dreams in the tanks, and I don't need a reminder."

Em thought the Dreamer created a beautiful, tranquil world, but understood his eagerness to escape it. "I understand. I'd get some cards from the clerk, but you probably couldn't hold them to play."

He grabbed a clean towel to wrap his hand and sat down beside her.
